Backup Paper

Monday, August 29th, 2011

The recent natural disasters on the East Coast serve as a serious reminder that backing up your small businesses’ data is important! If an earthquake followed by a hurricane isn’t enough to make you nervous about storing your paper then I don’t know what will. Thankfully, both disasters were relatively minor, but to those who felt the ground shake or to those whose business was flooded – well, I’m sure it was a pretty big deal.

Remember that backing your data up to the cloud has serious advantages. In addition to easy access, digital documents grant you peace of mind. At OfficeDrop, your data is securely stored in two redundant digital storage facilities. Paper, on the other hand, is vulnerable to a multitude of threats including fire, moisture, misplacement, and of course scissors. We recommend you get all of your important files into the cloud for peace of mind!

Are Tablets the Future of Small Business Computing?

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Prasad, our CEO, seems to think so!

He bought a nifty little case/keyboard for his iPad2 and is trying to make it work for him today. The keyboard is quite nice, and with the large number of apps that he’s got I think there is a real chance it could replace his real computer – eventually. (Of course, he’s got the OfficeDrop iPad app installed!)

Online Marketing Trends is reporting that table growth is really starting to take off:

“According to a new report by Forrester Research, in partnership with Bizrate Insights, the number of Americans owning tablet devices is forecast to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 51% between 2010 and 2015, while tablet commerce is expected to grow rapidly over the same period. 9% of surveyed online shoppers say they own a tablet device; among them, 78% own a smartphone as well, while 22% of tablet owners (2% of online shoppers) own a tablet only.”

We think that the tablet craze is really a fundamental shift in computing for businesses, and we are excited about the new applications and features that Prasad will dream up while he tries to go without his laptop for a few days.

OfficeDrop on BostInno

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

A post I wrote about OfficeDrop’s pricing strategy shift is now up on BostInnovation. The article is about our switch to a freemium pricing strategy, and you can read it here.

We are very excited at the growth we’ve had since July – post our pricing changes and post our new iPhone app launch. I believe that the primary driver for this success is the fact that we listened to our customers and rapidly made changes to how we sold our app after launching in the Android marketplace. One of the most important changes was the introduction of our free plan. Since then things have been great (with the exception of some scaling issues we experienced in the middle of July, which our technical team worked some long hours to address.)

Another Great OfficeDrop Review by a Customer

Friday, August 5th, 2011

It feels great when customers write nice things about us! As the marketing person here at OfficeDrop, I work hard with my team to get reporters to notice us. But when actual paying customers take the time out to write positive reviews of OfficeDrop it really shows off the hard work the development team puts into the product!

OfficeDrop Review by William Higgins

William Higgins
William Higgins

William Higgins is an ECM technologist for a major financial institution in Atlanta, GA. So, he knows what he’s talking about when he discusses managing content and cloud based technologies. His post is called “Scanning Documents to the Cloud with OfficeDrop.

William writes about OfficeDrop on his blog, augusthiggins.net. He says, “I work with Enterprise Content Management (or ECM) systems for a living and have an extensive background in Imaging or Document Capture.  But yet, at home I struggle to find a good way to capture important documents and keep them intelligently organized.”

Of course, this is where OfficeDrop enters the picture!

He starts off by showing how he uses ScanDrop to scan to the cloud, “The user interface is styliezed like the newer Microsoft Office applications with the menu ribbon at the top.  OfficeDrop makes good use of Folders and Labels…”

The he goes on to explain how to use OfficeDrop’s cloud filing system to organize and quickly find documents, “If foldering and labels weren’t enough, OfficeDrop also creates full-text searchable PDF files of the scanned documents you store in the cloud.  This means that even if you don’t spend the time organizing your documents in folders or adding lables, you can still do a “Google”-like fuzzy search of your document contents.”

Thanks for the great write up, William!

iCloud and OfficeDrop

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

This is going to be big!

The team here at OfficeDrop was glued to the live updates on Apple’s new iOS and iCloud… and we got pretty excited.

While some pundits have been claiming that iCloud will kill existing document sync, access, collaboration and sharing startups, we think otherwise. OfficeDrop CEO, Prasad Thammineni, was quoted in Macworld and conveyed our excitement about the new announcement. From the Macworld article:

Prasad Thammineni, OfficeDrop’s CEO, said he saw opportunity. Apple’s new service, he said, isn’t necessarily oriented toward business-sized customers—but it could educate those customers about the advantages of cloud storage and expand his company’s market.

“It’s going to educate consumers to say ‘I want my data to go where I go.’ That will prompt customers and small businesses to say they want to do their data the same way,” Thammineni said. He added: “So for us, we see this as a big positive thing.”

We have reason to be so optimistic about Apple’s iCloud. When Microsoft began their “To the Cloud” campaign in November of 2010, we saw our keyword “cloud” related search traffic double from the previous month. And today, this traffic is up 5x what it was before Microsoft began educating the world about the cloud. (Note that while all search traffic for OfficeDrop has grown in that timeframe, it hasn’t grown anything like cloud related traffic. And there was a very distinct, positive change in the cloud related search traffic growth pre and post Microsoft campaign.)

Apple’s iCloud efforts will help propel cloud usage to the masses (or at least beyond the early adopters.) And since Apple is so laser focused on the consumer, OfficeDrop’s target customer base of small business owners will be left searching for a solution that meets their special needs. According to research that we’ve seen, last year only 11% of small businesses were using cloud based SaaS solutions – up from 8% the year before, but still a tiny percentage. And once you go cloud you are 4x more likely to try another cloud solution. If Apple can pull this off they will be the first baby-step into cloud services that our potential customers need!

Finally, our ScanDrop scanning software app thrives on scanning paper into people’s cloud based accounts, and is really designed for customers who use multiple cloud services. So one more strong cloud offering is quite good for ScanDrop, and will help our Mac ScanDrop scanner software revenue grow.
