More On Tablets Driving Traffic

Friday, May 18th, 2012

officedrop tablet appAdobe has some research that highlights how important tablets are becoming for driving web traffic (thanks to Mediapost for a great write up on this.)  We are seeing this firsthand with the traffic both to the OfficeDrop website and engagement with the OfficeDrop iPad app.

Tablets are really changing the way people and small businesses interact with the internet. If you don’t yet have a tablet… you should get one! :)

Some great quotes on how tablets are driving a ton of traffic from the MediaPost article:

  • “The share of Web site traffic on tablets grew more than 300% in the past year”
  • Tablet share will reach 10% of all traffic by 2014 (that’s it? I bet it will be more!)
  • “Within one year of the iPad launch in Q2 2010, tablet visits represented 1% of total Web site visits, reaching 4.3% of total visits one year later, up more than 300%.”
  • “Tablets generated 4.3% of total Web site visits, compared with smartphones at 6.1%, in Q1 2012″

SMB Tablet Deployments to Rise

Monday, May 14th, 2012

A recent study by Spiceworks (an IT network) has some interesting facts about small businesses’ planned tablet adoption. It’s no surprise that SMB’s are bringing on the tablets – we are seeing huge growth here in the use of the OfficeDrop iPad app.

The study states, “Tablet purchases and planned deployments rise… Sixty-two percent of SMBs have deployed or plan to deploy tablet devices, such as iPads, within the next six months. That figure is up from the 50 percent reported for the second half of 2011.”

62% of small businesses will have deployed tablets in the coming year! That is amazing.

Other good news from the study is that small business IT budgets are holding steady. A good sign for the economy, and also a sign that technology investments continue to help small businesses become more efficient.

When to OEM

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

oem vs buildWe just published a piece on BostInno on when large companies should OEM vs. build a product in house. The build vs. partner decision is a big one for large companies, particularly ones looking to get into competitive cloud spaces such as cloud storage.

The top two questions on all of these decision-makers’ minds are: ‘How much will it cost?,’ and ‘How fast can we deliver the product?’ Cost and speed are two major concerns, but there are also some other big factors that should go into the decision-making process when considering to build in-house or via a third-party partnership. The other key concerns we mention in the piece are:

  • Speed
  • Cost
  • Maintenance
  • Best Practices
  • Focus

Teams, hiring, and managing people are as big a part in the decision to build in-house or to OEM-it as the cloud offering that you want to create. If you truly want a competitive advantage over others in your market, you need to think beyond speed and cost, and more about longevity. It can take a big investment to create a new offering, so it’s important you have a plan to support that product once it hits the market. Your examination of these areas will help you make the best educated decision for your company.

David vs. Goliath at BusinessInsider Startup 2012

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

OfficeDrop VP of Marketing & Business Development, Healy Jones, spoke at last week’s BusinessInsider Startup 2012 event in NYC. The topic was David vs. Goliath – how small companies can compete against big players like Google and Apple.

Julia Kenney of TMCnet infoTech Spotlight covered the speech with a nice write up. You can read her article here, in the cloud storage channel, called “How to Compete with Apple and Google.

A couple of great quotes from her piece include:

“It all has to do with being lean,” said Jones. He noted how long it takes companies such as Google and Apple to launch anything because of all the administrative processes required before any decisions can officially be made.”

and

Also, “swallow your pride and get big friends,” the audience found an important piece of advice from Jones. “Big companies are super duper predictable,” which ultimately gives the smaller companies an incredible advantage which can put them ahead of the goliaths.”

Hopefully BusinessInsider will publish the video of the event, at which point we’ll link to it.

Also – TCMnet covered an update to OfficeDrop’s online cloud storage on May 3rd. You can read the coverage here, called “OfficeDrop Announces New Upgrades to Its Online Cloud Storage Offering.”

OfficeDrop on Pandodaily

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

We are very happy to have been featured on Pandodaily recently in a piece penned by Erin Griffith. I’ve been very happy with the depth of the articles on Pando, so it’s exciting to have them cover our recent news. You can read about OfficeDrop on Pandodaily here.

She writes:

“Boston-based OfficeDrop has refreshed its product. The B2B-focused cloud storage provider now accepts files of any type and has doubled the size of its storage plans to accommodate for it.

Since the company’s focus is on the ability to scan and upload files from devices, which are then indexed as PDFs, OfficeDrop also upgraded its back-end to make that process faster. Oh, and the link sharing function Dropbox just announced has been a feature at OfficeDrop for some time now.”

It’s great to get solid press in the newest technology blog. If you haven’t spent time on their site, you should check it out. There are some great articles.

Online Cloud Storage to Reach $3 Billion This Year

Monday, April 30th, 2012

A while ago IDC predicted that this year, 2012, would be the year that the online storage industry would reach $3 billion. That’s pretty awesome, and the recent entrance of Apple last year and Google this year to the party shows that big companies are starting to take this space seriously.

OfficeDrop continues to have a great year, and although we do feel a little like David vs. a bunch of Goliaths, we are still excited that so many small businesses trust us to be their cloud filing system.

I’ll be giving a talk at the upcoming Business Insider event in NYC on how lean startups can compete in crowded spaces and thrive. Here are a couple of slides which I’ll be using at the talk. Hope to see you there!
