David vs. Goliath at BusinessInsider Startup 2012

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

OfficeDrop VP of Marketing & Business Development, Healy Jones, spoke at last week’s BusinessInsider Startup 2012 event in NYC. The topic was David vs. Goliath – how small companies can compete against big players like Google and Apple.

Julia Kenney of TMCnet infoTech Spotlight covered the speech with a nice write up. You can read her article here, in the cloud storage channel, called “How to Compete with Apple and Google.

A couple of great quotes from her piece include:

“It all has to do with being lean,” said Jones. He noted how long it takes companies such as Google and Apple to launch anything because of all the administrative processes required before any decisions can officially be made.”

and

Also, “swallow your pride and get big friends,” the audience found an important piece of advice from Jones. “Big companies are super duper predictable,” which ultimately gives the smaller companies an incredible advantage which can put them ahead of the goliaths.”

Hopefully BusinessInsider will publish the video of the event, at which point we’ll link to it.

Also – TCMnet covered an update to OfficeDrop’s online cloud storage on May 3rd. You can read the coverage here, called “OfficeDrop Announces New Upgrades to Its Online Cloud Storage Offering.”

OfficeDrop on Pandodaily

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

We are very happy to have been featured on Pandodaily recently in a piece penned by Erin Griffith. I’ve been very happy with the depth of the articles on Pando, so it’s exciting to have them cover our recent news. You can read about OfficeDrop on Pandodaily here.

She writes:

“Boston-based OfficeDrop has refreshed its product. The B2B-focused cloud storage provider now accepts files of any type and has doubled the size of its storage plans to accommodate for it.

Since the company’s focus is on the ability to scan and upload files from devices, which are then indexed as PDFs, OfficeDrop also upgraded its back-end to make that process faster. Oh, and the link sharing function Dropbox just announced has been a feature at OfficeDrop for some time now.”

It’s great to get solid press in the newest technology blog. If you haven’t spent time on their site, you should check it out. There are some great articles.

OfficeDrop on NPR

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

OfficeDrop was on WBUR, a Boston area NPR station this morning! The piece was about startup real estate in Kendall Square, the leading innovation district in Boston.

I (Healy Jones) am interviewed by well known NPR reporter Curt Nickish about our quest to find new office space. OfficeDrop is growing, and we are striking deals with large companies, so we want to move into better digs.

The piece pokes a little fun at our dog-centric culture, and is a good listen to anyone who knows the Boston startup ecosystem.

The article says:

“Why You Need It: This digital filing system handles any kind of paperwork. Imagine you’re at a business lunch, and you take notes on a napkin. With your iPhone, Android handset, or iPad camera, you can scan your napkin scribbles, a paper contract that someone else at the table needs you to sign, and the receipt for your meal.

OfficeDrop saves them all to the cloud as PDF files that are instantly searchable. While you sit there, you can share everything with your assistant back at the office.”

Fun Wall Street Journal Article with OfficeDrop

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

OfficeDrop iPad lover & cloud computing expert (and CEO) Prasad Thammineni was highly featured in Saturday’s Wall Street Journal in an article on the Steve Jobs Biography. The article starts with, “Prasad Thammineni, the chief executive of a file-sharing start-up called OfficeDrop in Cambridge, Mass., was no fan of Steve Jobs after Apple took a long time adding one of the company’s apps to its iTunes Store. But as he read the hefty biography “Steve Jobs,” the 42-year-old Mr. Thammineni found himself buying into many of the Apple co-founder’s management ideas.”

Appearing on the first page of the Management section of the WSJ, the article is a lot of fun. It highlights many of the take-aways that other CEOs have gleamed from the Jobs biography, including things like mastering communication among the team, motivating employees, and seeking perfection.

Thankfully, Prasad does not take the Steve Jobs emulation to the extreme highlighted by some of the CEOs in the article! It’s a fun read and worth checking out.

Prasad on Fast Company – Innovating in a Crowded Space

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Prasad has another great post on Fast Company – this time on adapting in a competitive, crowded & commoditized market. It’s called “In the Commoditization of Everything, Adaptation Will Win.

He draws on OfficeDrop’s experience in the crowded cloud storage space and talks about how we are managing to grow despite the competition (one of our solutions includes our OEM cloud storage program.) The key point he makes: “Responsiveness to change is the number one advantage startups have over larger incumbents.”

Happy New Years – OfficeDrop’s ScanDrop an App to Kickstart 2012

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

Tuaw, the “unofficial Apple blog,” has included OfficeDrop’s ScanDrop Mac scanner software as one of their “Apps to Kickstart your New Year’s Resolutions.”

The article says:

If you already have a scanner or multi-function printer but you’d like to move to cloud storage of your scans, give the $19.99 ScanDrop for the Mac a try. ScanDrop works with Evernote, Google Docs or OfficeDrop’s cloud service, but scanned files can also be saved on Dropbox or whatever other cloud service you utilize.

You can check out our review from March into a fuller look at the service. If you want to give it a try without dropping $20, the company offers the free ScanDrop Lite allowing scanning of up to 15 pages.

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

Get organized this year with OfficeDrop. It’s never been a better time to get your files into the cloud. You’ll feel much more relaxed once your important documents are saved in the cloud, and the anywhere, anytime access the cloud gives you will make you more productive this year!

Small Business Trends Article – Don’t Hate the Launch

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

Prasad Thammineni, our CEO, has another post on Small Business Trends. This time the post is about launching products – in particular, launching internet products/services. There has been a lot of talk recently about how a company shouldn’t launch their new stuff, but instead should slow roll it out to the market. At OfficeDrop we’ve had a lot of luck launching products. So Prasad‘s piece is titled “Don’t Be a Launch Hater.”

He talks about how you can re-launch if you fail the first time, using our service as an example: “It’s foolish to think that your launch “coming out party” is your one opportunity for press, your one shot at greatness. People make the assumption that the spark from a launch has to be doused with a firehose if a startup decides to adjust its strategy. Nothing could be further from the truth. We launched several years ago as a mail-in scanning service. This year, we introduced apps that let people scan to the cloud themselves.”
