Expect an Updated Web Interface

Friday, October 5th, 2012

OfficeDrop is in the process of updating our web application’s interface. Expect some great things soon!

Why Improve the Web App?

We needed to modernize the web application’s look and feel, as the previous version was build several years ago. We wanted to pull important and highly used features, such as sharing, closer to your clicks. We also wanted to use modern web technologies, mainly HTML5, and prepare the app for use both on tablets and also with touch screen devices.

Not all functionality will be available in the new web app, but you will be able to go back to the older app to do these actions. You can see a list of these items here, and rest assured that we are working hard to get all the features you know and love into this version of OfficeDrop’s web client. Help is available here.

Improved iPhone and iPad Scanner Apps Include Voice Search and Social Sharing

Monday, October 1st, 2012

We are really excited to announce major improvements to our iOS apps. These updates take advantage of several huge improvements to the new iOS 6 recently released by Apple, including social sharing and the improved camera on the newest iPhones. An even bigger update includes Voice Search! That’s right, you can now do file search with just your voice!!!

“The OfficeDrop iOS 6 updates are some of our most innovative yet,” said OfficeDrop CEO Prasad Thammineni. “We wanted to take some of the existing features iPhone and iPad owners are excited about and tie them into the app in a functional way. Both voice search and social sharing fit with OfficeDrop’s mission to create a dead-simple way for small businesses to go paperless and find what they need in an instant.

Voice Search on the iPhone and iPad

Here is a quick video that shows the power of OfficeDrop’s iOS voice search. With this voice search you can find words, phrases and numbers in your files and file names right from your iPhone or iPad.

Social Sharing with iOS 6

iOS 6 is built for sharing on social networks, and the updated OfficeDrop iOS apps take advantage of these sharing features. Apple included Twitter and Facebook sharing, which our app can now tap into. We added our own, business focused, sharing connection into LinkedIN. Now, if you want to tweet out a scan or file, or post an entire folder to LinkedIN you can do so right from your device. Here is how it works:

Better Scanning with the iPhone and iPad

Our smartphone scanner apps just got a lot better with Image Enhancement, perspective correction and auto-edge detection for your iOS device. This brings the iOS devices scanning capabilities up to par with our Android scanner apps’ recent update.

OfficeDrop Updates iPhone and iPad Scanner Apps

Includes New Voice Search, Social Sharing and Other Major iOS 6 Updates

October 1, 2012 — Cambridge, MA — Today, OfficeDrop is announcing a brand new version of its popular iPhone and iPad scanner apps for iOS 6. Using the same technology that powers Siri voice recognition search, users can now find documents within OfficeDrop’s online cloud storage system with voice commands. The new update also includes social sharing, so users can instantly send document access links and updates from their OfficeDrop account to Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

The OfficeDrop iOS 6 updates are some of our most innovative yet,” said OfficeDrop CEO Prasad Thammineni. “We wanted to take some of the existing features iPhone and iPad owners are excited about and tie them into the app in a functional way. Both voice search and social sharing fit with OfficeDrop’s mission to create a dead-simple way for small businesses to go paperless and find what they need in an instant.

Siri Search, Social Sharing and a Lot More!

Finding documents just got a step easier using Siri-like voice recognition technology paired with optical character recognition (OCR) search technology. OCR means that when a user scans a document, OfficeDrop can ‘read’ the PDF image and retrieve it in seconds. Now, users can speak a voice command of a word or phrase, such as “Marriott invoice from Charlotte, North Carolina,” and instantly pull up any document scanned into their account containing those words. Watch a demo of the new voice search feature here.

OfficeDrop Android App Now Includes Image Enhancement for Better Scans

Friday, September 7th, 2012

Today we’ve just released a major improvement to our Android scanner app. This update actually improves the quality of the photo you take for you scans! So your mobile smartphone scanning just got better, easier and faster, and is part of our commitment to giving you the ability to get the best cloud scanning software possible. Here is how this scanning update works for the Android family of devices:

Image Enhancement and Auto Edge Detection on Android

OfficeDrop Android Scanning

Initial Scan, Auto Edge Detection, Image Enhancement

Now, when you use your Android device to scan a piece of paper, the OfficeDrop app will detect the edges AND then adjust the perspective of the scan, so it looks like you took a nice shot of the scan right from directly overhead of the paper. Then, if you want, you can select the enhance option which will improve the quality of the image (and turn it into a black and white image) and thus will make the scan clean and crisp and ready for high quality OCR by the OfficeDrop file search engine.

Get the updated app now

You  can get the OfficeDrop Android App in Google’s Play store by clicking the button below on your Android device.

Press on the OfficeDrop / ExpenseMagic Integration

Monday, August 20th, 2012

We got some great press this past Friday on the ExpenseMagic/OfficeDrop integration! Both TechCrunch and Fast Company wrote about about how we make it fast and simple to create expense reports right from your mobile phones or PC’s desktop.

TechCrunch on OfficeDrop and ExpenseMagic

TechCrunch writer Alex Williams covered the integration OfficeDrop/ExpenseMagic combination, writing that “today I had a briefing with OfficeDrop which now has a service that works with ExpenseMagic for scanning and creating expense documents from an iOS, Android device or your desktop. It seems good enough to offer the potential for eliminating much of the manual work I do in preparing expense reports during my precious weekends.”

When Alex interviewed me for the piece, he also asked a lot of questions about the history of OfficeDrop. We discussed how the company was originally a mail in scanning service, and he immediately understood how we used that background as a basis for entering the cloud storage world:

“OfficeDrop has scanning and optics in its DNA. The company started as a service you could use to send your mail for scanning. The model did not work. People wanted to do the scanning themselves. So they pivoted, built a strong search engine to go with the scanning and now offer a combined storage and collaboration service. They see themselves fitting between Box and Dropbox, offering a service for small business people for easily scanning receipts, ideally from a mobile device. Google Drive is also seen as a competitor.”

FastCompany “Free You From Expense Report Hell”

Fast Company’s Christina Chaey’s piece on the integration has an awesome title: “OfficeDrop And ExpenseMagic Want To Free You From Expense Report Hell.” Of course, we do think that’s what the integration will help you do, since getting automated expense reports is potentially a huge time saver!

Christina says, “Through the new partnership, mobile and desktop users will be able to combine OfficeDrop’s smart text recognition technology, which makes the text in your scans searchable, with ExpenseMagic’s data extraction to generate expense reports from any receipts you scan using OfficeDrop. Receipts will go into an ExpenseMagic “uploads” folder, from which ExpenseMagic’s India-based bookkeepers will generate reports that they’ll then drop into a “results” folder overnight.”

We are pretty happy with the way we’ve evolved into a searchable cloud storage system, with the smartphone scanner applications that help small businesses digitize paper, plus the file search engine that helps you find the exact document that you are looking for in an instant. It’s really great to be recognized by a major technology publications like TechCrunch and Fast Company!
