Updated OfficeDrop Mobile Apps

OfficeDrop Android App

Last week saw updates to OfficeDrop’s mobile apps – both the android and the iOS apps. These updates fixed various bugs and have a few performance improvements. For the OfficeDrop iPhone app, there is now a better on-boarding to scanning process for new users. Existing users won’t see a change with this.

You can get the updated mobile applications in the respective app stores.

Android users, click here to the get OfficeDrop Anroid app.

iPhone and iPad users, click here to get the OfficeDrop iPhone and iPad apps.

Small Business Cloud Computing Trends

Yesterday’s blog post on Gartner’s take on cloud computing came to us while we read a Wired piece on, well, the same topic. It’s a good enough piece that you should check it out too here.

Major topics are: is it the end of the PC era (kind of, but PCs’ are not going away, they are less of a focus); Apps and more apps; mobile = powerful. And more!

Gartner on Cloud Computing

Gartner is predicting that everyone has a “personal cloud” by 2014. That’s pretty soon, but the idea is very interesting. At OfficeDrop, we see a huge drive toward small businesses using the cloud more and more, and agree with a few of the key themes from Gartner’s thesis (the following are quotes from the piece, followed by our commentary):

  • Megatrend No. 1: Consumerization — You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet: We agree, and are trying to design an app for small businesses that plays off of the styles, experience and friendliness that consumers find with cloud applications. With the power of a business tool.
  • Megatrend No. 3: “App-ification” — From Applications to Apps: Yup, OfficeDrop is on it with our slew of apps, and more are on the way, like the OfficeDrop iPhone PDF app and our Android scanner app
  • Megatrend No. 5: The Mobility Shift — Wherever and Whenever You Want: Since most of our usage is now mobile we’ll have to agree!!

Thanks!

Thank you to everyone who attended the OfficeDrop “David vs. Goliath” talk at SXSW this weekend. When we have a copy of the podcast we’ll be sure to link to it from the blog.

The Cloud is Just Beginning

Business Insider has a post on technologies that will change your life – the cloud is number one. Check out the article here.

The article references Microsoft’s “to the cloud” campaign – which lead us to the topic of large companies getting into the cloud computing space. In particular, OfficeDrop is in the competitive online storage space, in which large companies like Microsoft’s Skydrive, Apple’s iCloud and Google’s supposed gdrive compete.

But we are not scared of competition from these large companies! In fact, we are giving a talk at this year’s SXSW conference in Austin and invite you to attend if you’ll be at the conference.

The title is “When Goliath Tries to Steal Your Lunch Money.” It will be on Saturday Moarch 10th at 5 pm. More details on the OfficeDrop SXSW talk here.

We hope to see you there!

OfficeDrop iOS Apps are an 2012 Appy Awards Finalist

We are very pleased to be finalists in the 2012 Appy Awards! OfficeDrop is one of three finalists in the Productivity category, and we are excited that the Appy Awards recognize how productive our iOS Apps can make small business owners.

Check out the finalists here!

MediaPost runs the Appy Awards. Kenneth Fadner, MediaPost’s Chairman and Publisher, says, “There continues to be such enormous creativity in the field of app development. Our editorial mobile coverage strives to be the finest in the industry, and we’re excited to continue our tradition of honoring the best apps in every imaginable category.”

The finalist page describes OfficeDrop’s apps as:

With OfficeDrop’s free iPhone and iPad app, users can snap a picture of a document with their phones and upload it directly to the cloud, where it becomes fully text-searchable and easy to organize, share, and collaborate on. This app makes going paperless easy for small businesses, in addition to saving time and money. OfficeDrop has completely changed the workflow for many users, allowing them to get more done in less time because they aren’t wasting time scanning paper or dealing with paper documents in filing cabinets. OfficeDrop makes the paperless office an option for small businesses.

If you don’t yet have the OfficeDrop iPhone PDF app or the OfficeDrop iPad Paper to Go app get them now!

Prasad on Tablets

By now you should know OfficeDrop CEO & Cloud Computing Expert Prasad Thammineni loves tablets.

He’s at it again, this time writing an article for Small Business Trends on why Your Small Business Needs a Tablet.

One of his key points in the post:

”Tablets are designed simple and functional, important distinctions for small businesses. Rather than booting up a computer or laptop (or keeping one running for the entire day) that is also running a host of other programs in the background, tablet apps give you what you want when you want it. If you want to balance your checkbook, create an invoice or scan and send documents to the cloud, jumping into an app is much easier than booting up a program on a traditional computer. It’s also important to point out that beyond the obvious tablet choice of the iPad – the Amazon Kindle and now the Samsung Galaxy – have put competitive, appealing alternatives on the market.”

At OfficeDrop, we continue to find that our mobile – and in particular our iPad app – are driving our growth. The way businesses work with their data is changing, and tablets are at the forefront.

100000 Users

OfficeDrop has crossed another key customer milestone – we have over 100,000 users! That’s a lot!

Thanks to everyone who is now using our service! We are excited for what 2012 will bring.

Below is the press release announcing our growth – we had a little fun with it.

OfficeDrop Reaches 100,000 User Mark for Digital Filing Cabinet

The Future’s So Bright, We Gotta Wear Shades

Cambridge, MA — February 27, 2012 – Hey, remember back in November when OfficeDrop hit 50,000 users for our cloud filing cabinet software? We thought that was pretty rad. It was great proof that people like storing their paper in our searchable cloud. Well, it’s only three months later and we’ve doubled those users to 100,000. As Johnny Utah would say, “Woah.”

Luckily, unlike a Keanu Reeves character from the early ‘90s, CEO Prasad Thammineni has something really intelligent to say. “OfficeDrop has found our niche market of small businesses in paper-intensive industries who want to search and store their documents in the cloud. There’s a lot of them out there, and they find that our solution addresses their need to find the documents they need quickly, wherever they may be. Our strategy in 2012 is to expand our reach to even more small business users through strategic OEM partnerships and the continued adoption of our innovative smartphone and tablet apps. Oh, and, “am an F.B.AGENT!

OEM’ing the Cloud & The OfficeDrop Effect

One of the reasons OfficeDrop is able to reach so many small businesses is through OEM partnerships with companies small businesses are already familiar with. Last year, we partnered with Nuance, whose PaperPort software is shipped in the box with bazillions of scanners around the world. Now people can fire up their scanners and automatically connect to OfficeDrop’s cloud filing cabinet technology using PaperPort Anywhere. We’re expecting our growth to accelerate even more in the coming year with a series of new OEM partners. And custom, industry-specific applications of OfficeDrop you’d never expect.  No, we can’t tell you everything right now, but hang tight!

So what’s this talk about “The OfficeDrop Effect” you ask? It’s when you’re using OfficeDrop and you don’t even know it. It’s not the rotten kind of secret like when people swap out your restaurant coffee with Columbian Decaf Coffee Crystals and video tape your reaction. Think of it more like this: the companies you trust most are counting on OfficeDrop to build a secure, reliable connection to the cloud.

And if you’re going to South By Southwest, check out OfficeDrop’s session, “When Goliath Tries to Steal Your Lunch Money” on Saturday, March 10 — it’s just for startups like us that are out there “chasing the big wave” and battling big competition. And in our case, learning to play nice with our competition, too.

OfficeDrop’s OEM Strategy

OfficeDrop is getting a lot more clear about our OEM strategy, and you may notice some new pages on our website as we attempt to make this clear to potential partners.

Basically, we power cloud storage for large technology companies who want to add cloud filing to their offerings but who do not want to undertake the effort to build and manage a cloud storage infrastructure. Not to mention the mobile apps, desktop clients, etc.

We also help with the middle of the funnel marketing (i.e. free to paid conversions) and billing, support, etc.

We are starting to articulate this white label/OEM strategy on our OEM Cloud Storage page. This won’t really mean anything for the users of our cloud filing system, but at least you now know why we’ve added links to this page from our home page!

There is also a really nice video done by our friends at DreamSimplicity on the OEM product and how it work.

OfficeDrop SXSW Talk

OfficeDrop will be a speaker at this year’s South by Southwest Interactive (SXSW) this year! If you are attending the conference please come by and meet us!

The talk will be on how a startup, like us, can compete in a competitive industry when large companies start to enter.

The title of the talk is “When Goliath Tries to Steal Your Lunch Money” – and the take away will be that being a small dog does not translate to weakness. It means you have different assets, like the ability to be fast, nimble and innovative without bureaucracy getting in the way. You have the unique ability to connect with customers and treat them like gods. No matter your industry, if you play your small dog role the right way, when the big dogs come knocking, you’ll be ready to come out winning.

More details on the talk:

When Goliath Tries to Steal Your Lunch Money
Saturday, March 10
5:00PM – 6:00PM
